Book Review: Secret Vampire, Daughters of Darkness and Spellbinder
L.J. Smith is the author of the Night World book series.
The Night World is the secret society of vampires, werewolves, witches and shape shifters. They live among the humans without their knowledge.
There are two major rules in Night World:
1. Never tell a human about Night World
2. Never fall in love with a human
So of course you know the characters in these stories break all the rules!
Below is a short little description of each story.
“Secret Vampire” synopsis
The story is about a girl named Poppy. She thought the summer would be great until she is diagnosed with terminal cancer. In walks James her best friend and the boy she has been in love with forever. James has a secret. He is really a vampire living in the Night World and he loves Poppy too. Unless James does something drastic Poppy will die. James decides to make Poppy immortal so she can live, but that would mean breaking all the rules of Night World. Now James and Poppy will risk everything to be together and risk the punishment of the Night World.
“Daughters of Darkness” synopsis
The “Daughters of Darkness” centers around three vampire sisters: Rowan, Kestrel and Jade. They leave their isolated and controlled home in Night World to live free among the humans. Their brother, Ash, is sent by their father to find them and bring them back. That is exactly what he plans to do until he meets their new friend, Mary-Lynette. Ash is now in trouble, because he has found out they are soul mates. To make matters worse someone is stalking and threatening the sisters. Is there a rogue shape shifter out for blood? Now Ash must protect his sisters, find the threat and try not to break all the rules of Night World.
“Spell Binder” synopsis
The story is about witch cousins Thea and Blaise. They have been raised together since they were children and are like sisters. Blaise uses her witch powers to drive the boys crazy, literally. Thea meets a boy named Eric and thinks they are soul mates. Blaise tries everything to keep them apart. Thea doesn’t want to love him, but can’t help it. She is breaking one of the major rules of Night World, falling in love with a human and when she tells Eric about who she really is and about Night World Thea has broke the biggest rule of all in Night World. Did I mention Thea accidentally released the spirit of a long dead, powerful and very angry witch? A spell she was forbidden to cast anyways. Now she and Eric must stop the witch and survive long enough to see if they will be together or if the Night World will tear them apart.
I really liked this book. I thought the stories were great. All the stories involve teenagers so they are geared to the same audience as the Twilight series. In fact I’ve become a major fan of this whole series. I can’t wait to get the second Night World book and read the next three stories. I would recommend any fan of Twilight to check out these books.
